Whilst infrared photography can produce interesting and beautiful results, not everyone wants or can afford to convert a camera record infrared light. One affordable alternative is to convert your colour digital images to produce an infrared photography simulation using software. If you know how to use Photoshop, you can produce a believable infrared simulation. This can though be difficult and time consuming, even for experts.

One alternative is to use a software plug-in which can reproduce the tell-tale characteristics of infrared photography. There are a couple of good packages on the market such as Alien Skin Exposure. Whilst these are good, they are likely to be costly. So, is there a low-cost alternative?

In March 2016, Google took the decision to make the Nik Collection of plug-ins free. Previously this excellent collection of image editing tools cost more than $100. At one time the same tools had cost hundreds of dollars. The drawback though for those interested in Infrared photography is that there is no believable infrared simulation. The nearest you will find is an Infrared film filter, found in Nik Color Efex Pro.

Allow me then to offer you a solution. In this short video below I will present an easy technique you can use to produce an infrared simulation. This combines a couple of filters from Nik Color Efex with the Nik Silver Efex Pro software. The results are like those you can achieve using a digital infrared camera, although they will never be the same as shooting infrared. I hope you find this technique interesting and useful.
